Those Beautiful Bay Windows

Those Beautiful Bay Windows

The front bay windows definitely have proven to be a challenge but we knew they would be. Normally a 2 story house would have you up about 18 feet to work on 2nd floor windows but because this home’s foundation/cellar has a large portion above ground and sits on a sloping downward hill, the actual height needed to reach not only the bay windows but the roof for repairs, would need to be about 26 feet.

Paul has done an incredible job on this. Between taking on the challenge of setting up that scaffolding by himself and being brave enough to work that high, he’s accomplished so much. For me, simply getting the scaffolding setup was heart stopping, lol. I had to hook each piece of the scaffolding sides and floor boards to ropes and he then pulled them up. He then build that level. This process was done one piece at a time, building up one level at a time. He would then climb up to the top and we would begin the process again for the next level. My heart stopped every time that thing shook but Paul was brave enough to not only hang in there, but gain his sea legs and now works every day.

He repaired the roof portion by measuring from the scaffolding what was needed, then crawling through the attic with lumber and them climbing back up on the scaffolding to pull it through and attach it. Each time measuring the cuts, cutting the lumber and hauling each piece up, as well as any trim. So much was long since deteriorated by time and elements and needed to be replaced.

His work has been amazing. As many of you know he has done visual effects for years and his attention to detail and eye for art has him taking that same amount of time, energy and passion into these bay windows. We aren’t simply sanding down some of the paint until it’s smooth and then repainting, he is instead taking it all the way down to the bare wood. This was needed to get crisp clean lines. If you look closely at some of the pics below, you can see at the top of the bay windows and the painting he has begun. It is in a Victorian style; white facing boards with light gray inset trim. Beautiful work!

  2. Hello, we are your neighbors on Washington street. We have been in the house at Holt (219) and Washington part time for 6 years (brick colonial). We’d love to have you by for a glass of wine and to connect. We so appreciate that y’all are so excited with the journey! It’s a great community in this street!

    1. That’s so nice of you! We’d love to connect. We drive past your house almost every day. Lewisburg and this whole area are such warm people; everyone has been so kind. We love it. here. We are always around. Feel free to stop by and we can set up a time. Looking forward to it!

  3. Hi Debi, we will definitely stop by when we see people at the house. Y’all must be busy during the week when we are cooped up in our home offices in Webex meetings and such! When we get out on the weekends (mostly walking our motley gang of dogs who think they own Washington Street), we don’t see anyone at the house. We’ll make a point of putting down our pens and trying to track y’all down during the week. Hope to meet you soon!

    1. Sorry we’ve missed you. Lately we’ve done a lot of work in the cellar and around back. And we love dogs! Anytime you’re walking, feel free to come up in the yard or driveway and we’ll be on the lookout. I work from homes on Tues and Wed but other days of the week, am there. I’ve got your numbers and in fact I sent you a text message (if I copied it down right). Let me know if you didn’t get it. Likewise here, hope to say hello soon!
