Here We Are and We’re All In
It’s finally here. After 10 months of scrubbing, tearing out, testing radiators, fixing bathroom leaks, installing heat, hot water heaters and running pipes, we have finally moved into the beautiful ole’ home. She still has a LONG way to go, but it’s workable, actually quite livable and coming together beautifully.
There was a bit of a delay since my last post mainly because of the move and we had to get internet setup. Considering how long it’s been since the home had even a basic phone line, let’s just say this took a bit of hoop jumping to get it done but hoops were jumped and it’s done. We now have internet and can stream! With its new thermostat, tank-less hot water heater, new computerized boiler, new appliances and now internet, this is quickly becoming a modern functioning home.
The early morning rain we had this week kept us indoors for a bit so Paul used it as a chance to add one more modern convenience and installed a brass floor mount electrical receptacle. The pocket doors we have in some spaces but with brick fireplaces on the back side, makes running wires through them not an option. However the cellar with its high ceilings is an easy place to work and a floor mount to the exact spot we needed was a perfect option and we both think it’s quite pretty.
But I digress, let’s move on to a quick catch up of where we are now,
The home tour went marvelously. There were so many kind comments and wonderful visitors, it was very special to us. We stayed in the morning for a quick few moments to meet people and came back in the late afternoon to talk to those still touring. The feedback was very encouraging to us, more than you know. We were left with a signed guest book and even a beautifully hand painted brick of the home.
A big thank you to everyone who took time to work on our home for the setup, be a docent, assist with it all and as well to those who visited!
I understand the event this year was a great success for everyone. Thank you!
Now that we are in, we are making the rooms more livable, day by day. Since we are not actively working on all of the rooms, we are only doing quick remedies, buying basic items such as inexpensive shelving, racks, using previously owned curtains to hang for privacy, etc…to make them habitable until that room can be officially repaired. All in all, it’s looking quite nice in our opinion. Check it out!
The kitchen is the biggest accomplishment. Not only in terms of the amount of organizing, shelving, unpacking of utensils, pots, pans, etc…but including the work we put in before to get it to this point. As it stands now, we have temporary shelving, racks and tables setup until cabinets can be installed. What’s great is that this current setup also gives us the opportunity to walk through it all and see if our ideas for the cabinet placements make sense and are workable day to day.
Plus the kitchen is an almost fully functioning kitchen at that! The double oven is wired in (even though it’s not in a cabinet), the microwave next to it, we have an electric double burner for “stove top” as well as a grill with a gas “stove top” burner just outside. I also have panini grillers, fryers, coffee maker, espresso, etc…I’ve even been able to make one of my home made pizzes in the oven and it came out perfectly! With that, I’d say we’re up and running!
Oh and yes, the cat is still here (we simply call her/he “Kitty”). It’s becoming more comfortable with us each day. We’ve seen it snoozing out on the front porch bench pillows a time or two. It still won’t let us pet it but if we’re outside sitting on the porch relaxing for a brief moment, enjoying the lazy day, it will join us, too and just swish it’s tail…still just outside of arm’s length though. lol.

How how exciting for you two!!! Love seeing the progress over the last, almost, year. Y’all are really bringing this life-size doll house back to life!!!
I got tickled about the RV comment, considering, we do full-time RV living…lol. You are correct you really get creative and there are many storage compartments.
One finally comment…you and I have the same cooking items! I have the blue mixing bowl, stainless bowls, pans etc…All in our RV…lol Somethings you just can’t part with(my Grandmother’s baking dishes) Honestly, I’d feel right at home on your kitchen!!!
Amazing job y’all are doing!!! I look forward to seeing it in person one day soon.
Ahhh..thank you! And I know, right? I still have many of my mom’s and grandmother’s cooking utensils. And yep, I’ve spent many times in an RV and compartments for the compartments. Lol. Would love for you to see it sometime.
I totally agree all the rooms are really coming together and looking so nice. Also love that hand painted brick picture of your home!!
